Sales Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary Art and Antique Sculptures
From January 29th until March 22nd 2009 an exhibition and sale was held in the museum
for modern art Museum Jan van der Togt in Amstelveen (near Amsterdam), entitled
'Stars of China - Past and Present'.
Organiser and curator of this exhibition is Feng-Chun Ma, expert and consultant of Chinese and
Japanese art.
During past years, many exhibitions have been organised worldwide of modern Chinese art
where the origin and development during the last decades is the central theme.
This exhibition 'Chinese Stars - Past and Present' aims at emphasising how the past and present
in modern Chinese art are interwoven. Chinese history and culture forming the fundamental theme.
A speciality of this exhibition is the combination of more than 100 contemporary works, with a
selection of unique antique sculptures. Made from terracotta, stone, wood or bronze, they cover the various dynasties from the 8th century BC until the 15th century AD. They symbolise the traditional antiquity of China and demonstrate how many contemporary artists are inspired and influenced by the rich cultural, religious and political life of the Old China.
About 40 artists are represented in the exhibition. From each of them two or three works are shown,
mainly paintings, but also sculptures and photographs. Most of the exhibits are acquired directly
from the artists. On one hand they refer to China's historical, cultural, political or social past, on the
other hand to the modern China and it's consumer society.
The exhibition offers a range of many sided, surprising and original works in which Chinese
contemporary artists express their vision about present and past, China and the West, the religious
and secular China, fantasy and reality.
The selection has been made both of artists of international fame, namely Yue Minjun, but also
young upcoming artists. The result is a wide collection of talent and affordable art.
During the past two years Feng-Chun has met regularly in Beijing with a number of
contemporary artists who stimulated her to organise an exhibition of contemporary Chinese art,
whereby she can make use of her Chinese roots, background, and knowledge of traditional
art and culture. These qualities are indispensable in order to understand and interpret
contemporary Chinese art.
Almost all works are selected by her personally from the artists studios.
Main sponsor of this exhibition is Staalbankers - Private Banking, who will organise an exclusive
opening for its important clients on Thursday, January 29th 2009. The official opening by the
Museum will take place on February 1st. Both openings will be performed by Mr. Jochem Haakma,
ex-consul general in Hong Kong and Beijing and at the moment Managing Director of the TMF
group
