Yongzheng period (1723-1735)
The shallow dish has spreading sides and is supported on a slightly tapering foot.
The interior is decorated in a strong cobalt blue with a central roundel of a stylized lotus head wreathed in leafy stems within a double line border.
The reverse is painted in the typical Ming style with four open blooms of gardenia growing from a leafy scrolling stem. The base is inscribed with an apocryphal Ming Xuande six-character mark within a double circle.

During the later Ming dynasty and throughout the Qing dynasty, porcelain was produced imitating not only the fine white material, but also the quality of painting shown in the 15th century early Ming 'palace' bowls and dishes. The present dish exemplifies the effort of the Qing potters to show veneration for one of the greatest periods of porcelain production, also by using marks from the earlier ming reigns.
