Guangxu mark and period (1875-1908)

The dish with rounded sides is covered all over with a rich egg-yolk yellow glaze. The base is inscribed with a six-character reign mark in black enamel.
10.8 cm diameter

Provenance: A Dutch private collection

Imperial bowls and dishes of this type can be found throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties. According to the ‘Regulations of the Palace of the Qing Dynasty’, the Emperor, Empress and Empress Dowager were the only members of the family who could use the colour yellow without addition of any other colours. An identical example is illustrated in the Weishaupt Collection, where the author mentions that this dish is hardly distinguishable from 18th-century examples.
