The deep rounded body is supported by a stem with flared foot. The domed cover has a circular waisted finial. The whole surface is covered by extensive malachite encrustation.

When turned upside down the lids of these food containers serve a secondary function as dishes to serve the food within.

Baron Docteur Ludo van Bogaert-Sheid was a world famous scientist who avidly collected early Chinese art. The collection was sold at Sotheby’s in 1990 and the proceeds were donated to the Born-Bunge Foundation in Antwerp.

By 500 BC the dou was designed with hemispherical bowl and ring handles, covered by a hemispherical lid and set on a slender stem, See Watson, p. 38
