WF 71 A bamboo carved brush pot

十九世紀 竹雕筆筒

Subcategory:

19th century

The brushpot is of oval cylindrical form and elaborately carved in the round in high and pierced relief with a mountainous landscape showing numerous travellers wearing straw hats on foot or on horseback climbing up a steep and winding mountain road with further figures, some perched on the edge of a cliff, engaged in lively discussion while others have already arrived and are resting in pavilions on the mountain top nestling amidst the wutong trees. Near the top a group of figures is seen outside the gate in a stone wall leading to pavilions with tiled roofs. Halfway the road is an open-sided stable where a row of horses is seen drinking and further horses resting outside. Overhanging clouds are encircling the rim.
Height 18 cm

A bamboo mountain carving showing a similar scene was sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong, 19 November 1986, Lot 311
