19th century
The God of Immortality is depicted seated astride a deer, while holding a large ruyi sceptre in his right hand and a peach in his left. His head shows the characteristic protruding forehead with expressive wrinkles and arched brows. His finely incised long beard frames his chin below his warm smiling face. A cap is fastened at the back of his head, suspending two strings. He is dressed in a plaited robe with ample sleeves, fastened at the waist with a sash and cascading in undulous folds over his trousers and over the back of the deer.
The animal is standing four-square, with a large saddle over its back to support the Immortal, with its head turned to the right, watching a standing boy holding a lingzhi stem in both hands. The boy is wearing a tunic over baggy trousers, his hair surmounted by an ornament in the form of a pomegranate.
The carving shows a warm honey-coloured patina.
