BF 116 A small blue and white shallow bowl

約1600年 蓮池水鴨紋盤


Circa 1600

The small bowl is of shallow form with a domed centre, mantouxin, painted with a duck swimming amongs lotus. The rounded sides are painted with six further lotus emerging from the water. The outside has three leaves between small insects. The sunken base has a double line circle.
Diameter 11.5 cm

A similar dish from the Jan Menze van Diepen Stichting is illustrated by Dr Christiaan Jorg in A Selection from the Collection of Oriental Ceramics, Slochteren 2002, No 16, where he discusses the possible function of this bowl.

Forty similar bowls were amongst the load of the shipwreck the 'Witte Leeuw' sunk in 1613. Four examples are illustrated in C.L. Van der Pijl-Ketel, ed., The Ceramic Load of the 'Witte Leeuw' (1613), Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, pp. 146-47, Nuth 1982
