MFE 20 A pair of black painted green-ground kendis

十九世紀 綠地黑彩軍持一對

19th century

The kendis have a globular body and asmall mammiform spout and are surmounted by a high flaring neck. They are painted overall in black on a green ground with flowerheads growing from feathery scrolls below upright leaves encircling the neck. The inside of the neck is painted orange.
Height 22 cm; wood stands

An identical kendi is in the Adam Malik Museum, Jakarta, and illustrated by S Adhyatman in 'Kendi', Jakarta 1987, No. 305

Provenance: An old Dutch private collection acquired in the 1930s
