Shang dynasty (c. 1600-1100 BC)

The slender vessel has a trumpet-shaped neck and spreading foot. The slightly bulbous mid-section has two flanges that separate two taotie masks, all between a band of raised circles, one band wit two star-shaped apertures at both sides. The spreading foot has a band of leiwen pattern on top and further archaic motifs below.
The whole has extensive areas of malachite and reddish encrustation

A Dutch private collection  

Baron Docteur Ludo van Bogaert-Sheid was a world famous scientist who avidly collected early Chinese art. The collection was sold at Sotheby’s in 1990 and the proceeds were donated to the Born-Bunge Foundation in Antwerp.
