The three-tiered box is of ingot shape with straight sides. The cover is carved with the Immortal Zhang Xian standing in a lively pose, holding a bow and aiming his arrows at a dog gambolling on a cloud. He is accompanied by three boys, two at his left, one holding a branch of osmanthus, while a younger boy clutches his arm. To his right is a third boy standing under a pine tree and holding an alms bowl. The air and earth have different geometric grounds. The sides are carved with bushy leaves within a zigzag border.
The interiors are lacquered black.

Length: 11.1 cm; height: 9.5 cm

Zhang Xian 張仙 is an Immortal who protects boys by shooting the tiangou 天狗 (heavenly dog), which causes eclipses by eating the sun and moon, thus bringing death to male infants.
