十八世紀 竹雕筆筒

Subcategory:

18th century

The cylindrical brush pot is raised on three short feet and well carved in relief of varying depths and openwork at several areas. It depicts four sages, two standing near a river bank admiring an open scroll holding out  by one, below pine and wutong trees growing from a rock issuing maple leaves. Two other sages are seen on a higher level near a finely picked out bamboo grove, one standing holding a staff, while the other is seated in a relaxed pose leaning on his right arm.
A boy attendant is seated behind trees on a promontory near a balustrade holding a bag filled with a bundle of scrolls. The scene is divided by a large craggy rocky boulder.
The patina is of an attractive honey-brown tone.
Height 12.8 cm

A comparable brush pot from the Robert H. Blumenfield Collection of Bamboo Carvings was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 7 April 2015, lot 3057.
