BFE 55 A blue and white shallow 'Phoenix' dish

十六/十七世紀 青花長尾鳳紋盤

16th/17th century

The dish is of saucer shape with slightly flaring rounded sides raised on a short tapered foot ring. The centre is slightly concave conforming to the slightly convex base. The interior is painted with three long-tailed phoenixes in flight around a circular roundel of another phoenix reserved in white on the blue ground. Apocryphal six-character mark of Xuande on the base.
Diameter 19.5 cm

A comparable dish with Longqing four-character mark and dated third quarter of the 16th century, is illustrated by Ayers and Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, vol II, London, 1986, p.707, fig. 1212. This dish, like other known examples has a central cloud motif instead of this much rarer phoenix roundel.
