明天啟-崇禎 青花鶴紋瓶

Tianqi-Chongzhen, c.1621-1635

The slender pear-shaped vase stands on a straight foot rising to a waisted neck and flaring brown-dressed rim. The sides are painted in underglaze blue with two descending cranes and four wispy clouds. The creamy glaze is suffused with a fine even crackle. The base and interior are glazed. The base is inscribed with the character lu (good luck, prosp[erity) in underglaze blue.17,5 cm high

Provenance: Formerly in the private collection of Elisabeth Hendriks, Amsterdam

The present vase belongs to an interesting group, all with acrackled creamy glaze, thick cobalt blue decoration, brown rims and single-character marks on the base. Several examples decorated with flowers and butterflies were excavated in Jiangxi province from tombs datable to 1624, 1620-28 and 1634. Examples are in the Indianapolis Museum of Art(1) It has been suggested that these vases were produced at the Jizhou kilns in Jiangxi province
