WFE 79 A fine white jade 'Three Persimmons' group


Qianlong (1735-1795)

The well carved group is modelled as three persimmons growing from a big gnarled branch issuing a large leaf. A long-tailed bird with wide-spread wings is perched on one of the smaller leafy branches.
The stone is of an even white lustrous tone with areas of russet highlighting the larger leaf and part of one fruit.

Provenance: An old Dutch private collection acquired in the 1930s

The Chinese name for persimmon (shi 柿) is a homophone of 'things' (shi 事) and 'market' or 'business ' (shi 市)Three persimmons = 'May your business enjoy a threefold prosperity  (lishi sanbei 利市三倍)
