WLO 05 A gilt-lacquered bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara


Ming Dynasty, 16th century

The figure is seated on a lotus throne in dhyanasana, her right hand in vitarka mudra, her left hand holding a stalk of lotus rising up the shoulder, the chest adorned by elaborate beaded necklaces. The face with downcast eyes  and benevolent expression is surmounted by a crown around a high chignon. The back of the throne is incised with an inscription bearing the names of several persons who commissioned the production of this figure and with a cyclical (1593?)
